The Cook's Room
The earliest occupant of this room could have been called Mrs. Spratt and she
would have been employed as a 'Plain Cook'. Her day would have started at 6.00am
and she would have been expected to sweep and dust the Dining Room, clean the
grate, light the fire and sweep and clean the Front Hall and the front door-step
in addition to carrying out her work in the kitchen.
Plain cooks were only
expected to produce simple dishes - with dinners generally consisting of fish, a
joint and vegetables and a pudding or tart and luncheons of either a joint with
vegetables and plain pudding or cold meat, salad and potatoes. After the evening
dinner had been served at 6.30 or 7.00pm the plain cook would carrry on the
scullery-maid's work of cleaning dishes and scrubbing kitchen tables.
The ensuite has a short Victorian bath with a shower over.
