The Butler's Room
The earliest occupant of this room could have been called Mr Spedding and he
would have worked fairly hard for he had to ensure the wheels of domestic life
turned smoothly.
He was responsible for the household plate and nightly would ensure that it
was locked-away. In the morning he would give out those pieces to be cleaned.
He would probably have been responsible for his master's wardrobe. He would
normally have waited at breakfast, luncheon, tea and dinner. Perhaps his most
important duty was the traditional one of looking after the wine cellar,
decanting the wine for daily use and putting away the decanters after every meal.
